Derby/Notts Centre Meetings & Events
2024 Events Review:
What glorious weather we had in May which brought out many cars, visiting Staunton Harold Hall and surroundings brought back many memories of past visit’s , Staunton Harold being one of the meeting places back in the late 60s and early 70s of the PWA7C . Visiting the Ferries centre and stopping for lunch at the Bull’s Head in Hartshorne and then onto the Sharps Pottery Museum in Swadlincote, finishing the day with coffee and cake in the Magic Attic restaurant.
June was here and being present at the Austin Rally at Stonehurst Farm and museum turned out to be a great weekend with lots of interest, a very well organised weekend. Although the weather later in the month was cold and damp visiting Minnies Tea room in Ibstock, a new meeting venue, was a warm day with little cloud, and the jolly through some of Charnwood’s country side was a pleasant drive, the run organised by Barry and Eric, stopping for lunch at the Copt Oak finishing with Tea and Coffee at Barry’s and Chris’s.
July for us was a quite month with a few members visiting Beaulieu event with Eric being awarded a cup for the best in class for his Opal, while the members left at home had a visit to the Barton Marina for refreshment and a jolly over to Sudbury Stables Tea room for lunch. Returning after what was a busy week in Cumbria was excellent, very well organised and with plenty of interest, staying over for an extra day and visiting Beatrix Potters’ Museum and farm.
August we had a visit and talk in Uttoxeter starting at the White Hart Hotel with Coffee and Cake, cake supplied by Hazel who’s birthday was the day previous, the talk and walk about by Dave a local historian from the Redfern Cottage Museum organised by Hazel and John which although a bit damp was well worth taking in the heritage of Uttoxeter dating back to early 16 th century, leaving there for lunch in Marchington at the Dog and Partridge.
September Back from Holiday in Cornwall, meeting the group at the Swarkstone Garden centre with a jolly up to Parwich in the Derbyshire dales and lunch at the sycamore Inn turned out to be a wonderful day until the heavens opened up in Tissington with lighting and torrential rain to dampen the day, after waiting for the rain and wind to lighten we made our way back home, “you just can’t guarantee the English weather” if at any time you wish to join us at any time please drop us a line or call, October is the starting time of our Winter months at the Shackspeare Inn in Shardlow and have a few new interested people joining us, hopefully joining our friendly group and also as club members. You will be very welcome; November is our Quiz night organised by Colin and Mandy very well attended last year, one not to miss.
Winter 2023/24 Events Review:
Winter month have always been a bit of a problem as the winter month bring out the dedicated followers even when we have tried to make thing more interesting the support is somewhat low, we have around a 12 members who meet up on a regular basis meeting at the Shakespeare Inn in Shardlow sometime increasing to 16, the Month of March was slightly better with 18 with a book swap event. We only attract around the 30 mark for special occasions such as Christmas and New Year. Idea’s for later in the season is to see if we can fund speakers, we’ll see how that goes.
For the April 11 th meeting we are attending the Secret Diner at Sudbury Prison, all served by the inmates, starting at Swarkstone Garden Centre for coffee and a short leisurely drive to the Prison through Staffordshire.
Meeting again the following week for lunch at the John Thompson Inn, Swarkstone the 3rd Thursday of every Month.
The May 9 th meeting is at the Staunton Harold Nursery. Visiting the Ferries Centre, for Coffee, then a run to Hartshorne’s Bulls Head for lunch then onto Sharpes Pottery Museum and a visit to the Magic Attic.
The Magic Attic is an Archive with information dating back to the 1800s, a unique place to visit, Ron the manager is on hand to give us an insight to what they have for anyone interested in History, every Local news paper allocated, hard copy dating back to the 18/19/20 all painstakingly being digitised, and much, much, more. A must see if in the area.
