I was aware that some of the oil on the garage floor under my box saloon was due to leakage from the petrol pump, so I took the pump off, fitted a new gasket with blue Hylomar and tightened it all back up. The result was fresh oil appearing below the petrol pump – problem obviously not solved. More recently I had another go at the job and found where it had all gone so wrong. The photograph shows how fitting the gasket the wrong way round leaves a small oil escape channel via the extra hole (drain hole?) in the gasket round the edge of the petrol pump (bottom left in the photograph). I am not sure what the purpose of the gasket extra hole is beside trapping the unwary but having fitted it back together correctly I now have no need of the extra large drip tray underneath my seven.
